Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan became the all-time number one Hindi film in India as it collected Rs 1,028 crore worldwide since its release in January, Yash Raj Films (YRF) said. Pathaan marked the return of Shah Rukh Khan to the silver screen as the leading man. His last project zero, which released in 2018, was followed by cameos in R Madhavan's Rocketry: The Nambi Effect and Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, directed by Ayan Mukerji.

“I find it unbelievable that 'Pathaan' is one of the Hindi films in India today! The love and appreciation showered on 'Pathaan' by the audience is historic and can be seen in the box office result. As a director, I am proud to have made a film that has entertained people across the world,” Anand said in a statement.

The new milestone comes days after Pathaan became the highest grossing Hindi film worldwide in the history of Hindi cinema in its first release. Dangal is the highest grossing Indian film, with reported earnings of around Rs 2,000 crore.

In its initial phase or first phase of release, the Aamir Khan starrer earned over Rs 700 crore. In its second phase of theatrical release in China, the film's box office crossed the Rs 1,000 crore mark worldwide.

Other Indian films to cross the Rs 1000 crore mark globally include Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, RRR and K.G.F: Chapter 2.

Pathaan, which also stars John Abraham and Deepika Padukone, is an important step in YRF's spy franchise where characters from different films will cross paths at some point. The film follows the titular spy (Shah Rukh) who comes from exile to stop the outfit X terrorist group from launching a debilitating attack on India.

It is the fourth film in producer Aditya Chopra's espionage world, after Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai and War with Hrithik Roshan.
